CHANGE IS 'A COMING
Slowly
I just spent a couple of hours tumbling down the rabbit hole of blogs and vlogs created by women my age, hoping to find a few kindred spirits.
I clicked through Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube. And to be honest? Most of what I found left me disappointed.
Aside from some excellent political and science-focused content (and there’s plenty of that, thankfully), the rest was overwhelmingly about makeup and clothing. The usual formula: start the video bare-faced, cue the “miracle-in-a-bottle,” and voilà, human again. Less “tired” and more “ta-da!”
I mean, good for them. And their checkbooks! But for me? N O P E.
I was hoping for something meatier. I wanted to hear about their lives, different situations, belief systems, how they navigated family conflicts, marriages, friendships, and regrets. I guess I was craving meat, gristle and all… and all I could find were bonbons.
Now, I’m in the early stages of researching how to turn my blog into a vlog. Not to worry, dear friends, there will be no makeup tutorials. And not one of you gives a hoot what I’m wearing today. Understood.
When I listen and watch a speaker, I find I’m more immersed in a topic. Seeing the physical aspects of delight, surprise, anger, laughter, or sorrow makes any situation more relatable to me. That visual connection adds a layer of empathy (or sympathy) that words alone sometimes can’t reach.
I want part of my vlog to be about life in my 70s, what it feels like, what I’ve come to appreciate, and what still drives me absolutely bonkers. I’ll share my likes, dislikes, rants, and revelations about, well… just about everything. My hope is that you, my lovely readers and eventually viewers, will see bits of yourselves in my stories and feel inspired to share your own. There’s space here for you, too. Please, use it.
Another part of my vlog will reflect today’s political climate. If you haven’t noticed, I’m a liberal, tree-hugging Democrat. These days, I find myself near tears, or in full-on meltdown, over what’s happening in America. That said, I don’t expect everyone who reads or watches to share my views. There’s lots of room here for respectful conversation, and I welcome your voices, even (especially) if we don’t always agree.
I want to use the next 2-3 months to transition from a written blog to some video and ultimately a full vlog. So please stay with me and watch me, and give me feedback!
Now, I couldn’t live with myself knowing you were disappointed in me for not sharing, so here’s the list. This will not be show-and-tell.
